COMPefficiency


Educators need an assessment to measure the multiple components of reading comprehension to inform instruction and intervention. There are few, if any, measures currently available to do that well. Until now.

COMPefficiency (Comprehension Efficiency), introduced by FastBridge in fall 2016, was developed and designed as an innovation to assess and provide instructionally relevant information regarding both comprehension processes (e.g., summarizing, connecting, bridging, elaborating) and the comprehension product that is left over after reading concludes (i.e., qualities of the mental representation). These are the fundamental aspects of reading comprehension.

Uses and Applications

COMPefficiency is intended for use from grades 2-8 for universal screening, instructional diagnostics, and progress monitoring (levels 2 through 8 are available), and includes both narrative and expository passage sets . The assessment is fully automated, typically taking less than 10 minutes. This self-paced assessment is computer administered and scored.

Students read a passage of 250-500 words sentence by sentence. Although timed, students complete the assessment at their own pace. The passage is intermittently interrupted by a series of true-false questions designed to measure inferential processes. After they complete the passage, students respond to a set of multiple choice questions, which are designed to evaluate the quality of their mental representation. The student’s response accuracy and reading times, taken together, indicate the accuracy and efficiency of the reading processes.

The rate of sentence reading along with the accuracy of responses are measured. The overall score provides an estimate of comprehension efficiency. Supplemental scores include the accuracy of inferential processes during reading and the accuracy of the mental representation after reading.
